Damn did Disney just start making the same Chinese movies my parents watch on their bootleg Netflix. Mark Ruffalo is one of my favorite actors. This looks like another of his excellent works. The hearings are scheduled to begin at 10:00 EST. You can watch live online on CSPAN or PBS or most major networks. Reportedly, today's hearing will follow a unique format, and will look/sound a bit different to those of you that are familiar with watching House hearings. The day will start with opening statements from House Intel Chair Adam Schiff, ranking member Devin Nunes, and both witnesses, William Taylor and George Kent. Preface: For a while now, people on this sub have been asking me to make a dedicated post about my issues with Senator Sanders. At first, I didn't want to due to a lot of recent negative posts on Bernie here. At the same time, I think my views are important to consider as they come from a place of deep concern, for my future and my family's future. Ultimately, I think the biggest push was someone who told me they were able to Yang several people with my posts, which is really touching to hear, and why I finally decided to do this. A bit about me: I voted for Bernie in the primaries in 2016, Jill Stein in the general, and Zephyr Teachout as a downticket candidate in 2018. Now three years later since Bernie's last run, as a minority on welfare, now with personal experience with several of Bernie's flagship proposals, I cannot in good conscience vote for him this time around. Starting off, Bernies proposals are not dealing with the biggest elephant in the room: local and state governments. Its the state governments responsible for: Jim Crow laws, corrupt law enforcement, anti-lgbt laws, abortion laws, etc. It doesnt help that he continuously praises FDR, a man who knowingly allowed the passing of Jim Crow laws that barred minorities from the benefits of the New Deal, in order to gain the southern vote and never saw a need to help minorities with anything, leading to an age of prosperity for the majority of Americans, as long as you were white. It was needed at the time to get America out of the Great Depression, sure, but we really shouldn't be praising it and trying to bring it back. While Bernie is not racist, he is committing the same flaws that led to the ease of excluding minorities in the first place even now with The Green New Deal. While the New Deal was formally designed to benefit African Americans, some of its flagship programs, particularly those proposed during the First New Deal, either excluded African Americans or even hurt them. Problem with Bernie is that all of his plans work as trickle down for the public sector. Yes, trickle down. Bill Clinton further reinforced this with the 1994 Crime Bill, the same bill Bernie signed (yes, I know why he signed it - the Violence Against Women Act, but it overall led to disastrous consequences for those he wanted to help. Thanks to the 1994 Welfare Reform Act which was included with the bill, the federal gov can only provide the funding for social programs, while its the states that actually administer and execute the programs at the ground level. This has led to millions being missed or being denied over ridiculous reasons, cutting of funds, and mismanagement of funds (red states using tanf funds to fund abstinence programs in minority schools. As it is, Bernie is not addressing any of this. I voted for him previously, but had a problem with him in regards to this back then too. I was hoping he wouldve improved his policies or thought them over since 2016, but he has not. If trickle down is a disaster in the private sector, why are we still giving it a pass in the public sector? Were supposed to be fighting systems of oppression as progressives, but this one isnt given nearly amount of attention it should. Even worse, no one in Bernie's camp is even grilling him on this stuff to begin with. As a minority on public assistance, its really upsetting to see. Hes talking about M4A and FJG, when the poor cant even afford public trans (more on this later) and the homeless cant even afford to gather the necessary documents needed to apply to jobs in the first place. UBI is incredible in that it immediately deals with all of these issues, without placing the onus on state governments to actually carry it out - lest they make excuses and cut funding or prioritize certain neighborhoods like they do with everything else. Rather, the money is going directly to the people, especially those whove been ignored or treated as burdens up till now. FJG is hands down one of the most anti-disability friendly policies Ive heard being proposed in a while. Nevermind, the fact that most disabled cant even commute or work a job to begin with, but for those who can, it diminishes their unique strengths and forces them into an environment they most likely wont be suited for. Im also autistic and Ive been teased and harassed over misunderstandings at every min wage job Ive worked. Im also fairly easy to dupe into doing work for someone else or be taken advantage of. I cant imagine being stuck 30+ years in a job with unemployable, bitter people who are itching for a vulnerable punching bag to take out their anger on, and a boss who would rather turn a blind eye or be elsewhere, just because the government doesnt see me as a valuable person unless Im doing something to benefit it. This has already happened in France; we don't need tragedies of this form in America. Low-level gov work is rife with workplace abuse issues. A little bit more about me. My father was a state government worker. He worked as a janitor for a public school from the 80s up until his retirement in the mid-2010s. He wasnt disabled, but he was the only minority janitor there. They had him doing all the dirty work and overtime hours, and he rarely ever had enough time to just spend with me and my mother because of it. Another reason why the FJG scares me. As someone who helps out my parents with daily activities now, it wouldn't benefit myself, nor other caretakers either. For those with disabilities, Bernie's policies are beyond lacking: I support ending the sub-minimum wage. However, everything else is simply a pivot back to the FJG or welfare. SSDI and SSI is broken in this country and come with strict work limits and requirements. Thousands die every year from states cutting funds for administrative offices and people falling through the cracks. Yet, all Bernie plans on doing is increasing funding and expansion, which sounds good until you realize he's essentially just passing on more money to the states. The same states cutting the funding in the first place. While the actual checks can't be limited by the states, they can and do limit the amount of people who qualify. In comparison, Yang's FD is an unconditional 1000/m. SSI max is only 783 and most people only get around 600. SSDI is around 1. 1-1. 2k on average, and stacks with Yang's FD, which would be more than you would get with SSDI+SSI (1. 7-1. 8k+ vs. 2. 1-2. 2k. You are only eligible for SSDI if you have a proven work history and became disabled later on. If you were always disabled and have no work history, you are stuck with SSI. So why can't the FD stack with SSI? If people proposing this were actually on welfare, they'd understand why this is a bad idea. First off, it is not that FD doesn't stack, it's that SSI itself has an income ceiling of 1. 7k/m. If you make any more than that, you can no longer receive it. If the FD stacked, that is also the most you would be able to make per month(since the work limits are still in place due to the SSI) making the most they can make a year only ~21k annually. That means that's the most the disabled would be able to make, which does not sound favorable at all. Second, not only is this justification based in no firsthand experience of actually being on public assistance for your own survival, but no one is even proposing this option to begin with, and too many people are falling into nirvana fallacy levels of thinking for their justification on this matter. If you ask me, if anything, the onus should be on the senators to draft bills that actually fix this problem. They are not though, and Yang is the one actually being vocal about removing these strict work requirements and limits for people and bringing true reform to our broken welfare system; something I'm not hearing from Bernie outside of platitudes, and that are certainly not reflected in his disability rights page: Free college? Not working in NYC. If Bernie tries to get his free college through, it will most likely end up in a similar form as college here, where: it only applies to first-time undergrads, you or your household have to be making less than six figures, and I can easily see Bernie accepting such conditions. The problem with this though, is that it essentially makes free college a means-tested program where (going back to the issues of state government) people end up falling through the cracks. Even worse, since the government is the one subsidizing, the price for college will only rise even more because the students not covered will still be forced to pay out of pocket due to "needing college. This is literally what made college so expensive in the first place: the government subsidized and increased access to loans for students, leading to an increase in tuition and in turn, administrative costs, since the government was footing the bill for those covered. Those not covered still had to pay absurd costs for their tuition. Bernie is not getting the actual cost of college down, he's just subsidizing it (thus enabling the colleges' price gouging, while Yang is aiming to get the cost down altogether by NOT subsidizing them and forcing them to lower their administrative costs in order to receive continual funding. That way, college will be affordable for everyone who needs it, rather than just being free for some students and not others. As someone who spent 6 years in college, was on the dean's list, and graduated with a double B. A and both GPAs around 3. 5, Yang is 100% right here: To me, Bernies policies seem to have this continuing pattern of hurting the same people he wanted to help. The 15 min wage is leading to store closings in my neighborhood. It led to a significant cut in hours and my paycheck, and more "on-call" days at my previous job when it initially passed, while some of my coworkers were let-go altogether. There is now a large scanning robot at my local supermarket - the employees let the customers take pictures with it, making it especially good for business. Meanwhile, all the 15/hr has done is make it HARDER to get hired, because bosses dont see hiring people as worth the risk. Instead, they just double the load of their current employees. Meanwhile, while stores that served the community since I was a little kid are now closing, corporate chains have moved in to take their place. It also pushes people OFF of the welfare receive in the instances where they are properly paid, due to no longer being below the threshold; I know several people this has actually happened to. According to Bernie's logic though, these are the companies that "deserve" to stay in business since they can afford it - even though they're not paying their employees a "living wage" either. Castro actually had provisions in his plans that forbid unfair scheduling practices, but these seem to be absent in Bernie's minimum wage plan. I have had one Bernie supporter counter that at least now someone can get a second job, but that's even worse. People are already overworked to death, and hiring has become harder on business since it passed. Maybe it works in wealthier areas like Midtown or Williamsburg, but for poorer communities like mine, it's hurting us and is just not a good policy in practice; in no way should it be implemented federally. South Korea now also seems to be learning this the hard way: The detrimental effects of the 15/hr aside, making it harder on small businesses is gravely detrimental to minorities. Right now, we have a system where a black man without a record has a tougher time finding a job in both the public and private sector, than a poor white guy with a criminal record. I would feel much safer if minorities and vulnerable groups who could not get the government to listen to their concerns, have a way to be able to start their own businesses and provide for themselves and their families safely, doing something they enjoy, instead of joining gangs or relying on criminal activity out of desperation instead - which is all too common where I live. I will even go as far to say that, while it has already been far more difficult for black people to generate inter-generational wealth (especially due to FDR's New Deal and the redlining that happened as a result of it) compared to white families, white America seemed to have little to no issue with capitalism. Now that it's not working for their kids and grand kids, suddenly the system needs to be torn down altogether and we need to have socialism instead. For the longest time, women and minorities were banned from public institutions, with the emphasis here on public. Women's colleges and the HBCUs were created as a RESPONSE to this. Now, rather than fixing capitalism and having it work for more people than it ever has before, progressives are more keen on shutting down those avenues that brought about true progress for millions of minorities, all because of this dire commitment to ideological dogma. There are now Bernie supporters unironically claiming Human-Centered Capitalism does not exist, cannot exist, and the system must be destroyed altogether in favor of a more government-driven system. In the same country that left minorities powerless for centuries and sought to remove their power by making them MORE dependent on government programs for survival. If this sounds terribly privileged and dickish to you, welcome to my world. Additionally, he wants to ban charter schools, and his supporters wholeheartedly encourage this. Wait, why is this a problem? Isn't he doing this to help black and brown students? He is, but that's not the point. The point is that state public school systems have a long history of failing minority students and Bernie's own privilege (I hate to keep pointing this out but I really have to) is blinding him from seeing how important charter schools are to minority kids. Here in NYC, schools are still heavily zoned, making our schools the most racially segregated in America. In my neighborhood, all the public schools are poorly funded, while the white schools aren't. Furthermore, minority parents DON'T want charters taken away. They are the only schools even giving the kids here actual opportunity at a decent future. There is actually an ongoing fight in my own community right now because De Blasio is also anti-charter and he is not giving these kids any decent options after closing down their schools. Meanwhile, he was caught turning a blind eye towards a high-school grade-fixing and rigging their students' grades, allowing them to pass no matter what: Are some charters rackets that need to be dealt with? Absolutely. But again, regulation is what's needed and blanketly banning alternative choices and leaving only state-run public institutions and services as an option, only hurts minorities further by taking these alternative choices away from them. Should billionaires pay their fair share? Of course. I believe we should be attacking crony corporatism and the revolving door though, which Yang plans to do. Bernie just seems to want to fix corruption at the fed level, but even with that, he does not even support ranked choice voting, and his public funding voucher only exists in the form of a tax credit, which is useless for those that can't work. As for Yang and his proposals, the great thing about Yang is that he seems to care about everyone, whether theyre able to work or not. Even when it comes to his healthcare proposal, he actually includes public transportation included as part of it - something ALL the candidates should be doing as far as I'm concerned. This is the first real plan outside of UBI that seems to deal with a serious obstacle faced specifically by those in poverty that other candidates have given little to no mention to, Bernie included. I live in Southeast, Queens and whenever I travel to Manhattan, it's almost like visiting another country with how much better served it is compared to my neighborhood. Bernie funding infrastructure at the fed level just tells me that the states will prioritize the areas they want to, rather than helping everyone. Healthcare is not the biggest obstacle to the poor, transport and mobility is. For instance, I have medicaid but rarely go to the doctor, because where I live, the minimum amount Metrocard you can buy is 15-something at the local bodega or check cashing place, compared to the sheer amount of kiosks that litter Manhattan where you can buy one for just 3 or add any amount on to your card to make up the difference. As evidenced by years of infrastructural gentrification of NYC, better infrastructure does not reach everyone and does not equate to easier access. Right now, my entire family receives less than 1k/m on welfare. With Yang, we would get 3k/m. Thats an unbelievable game-changer for our lives, especially considering we live in NYC and bills are already extremely difficult to pay. The concerns about VAT are nonsense. I wish people fought against sales taxes as hard as I see them railing against the VAT. Just last year, De Blasio passed an internet tax shortly before running for president with little opposition; it now costs an additional dollar or more to buy anything online. I've had to pass on lunch while running errands at times, simply because I couldn't cover the sales tax at the fast food places around here. Yang's VAT is not isolated like sales taxes are; it comes alongside the FD. This not only covers the VAT itself, but also the taxes and fees that make it difficult for us to get things we need now. It is a lifetime payout and does not need to be continually renewed like current welfare. As for M4A, if the government cant offer better insurance, then they shouldnt be removing that choice from other people, especially those most vulnerable to abuse from the government. Right now, the biggest issue is people being denied treatment based on the insurance they have. If it is universal, that is no longer an issue. Right now, it seems like he's committing the same mistakes towards the poor that weve been doing for decades now. When it comes to what gov considers “basic healthcare”, its abysmal. Medicaid is subsidized private, but the state still allows whats provided. I want to know that what the government is offering me is worth having only Berniecare, and for me, as his bill is now, it isnt. Now, I am not against it, but its not enough to actually help those who are poor. For me, Yangs plan is immediately better. Hes actually dissecting and attacking the roadblocks the poor go through in regards to medicare at every level, and isnt just eliminating private and focusing on eliminating it as if it makes everything better, while treating everything else as an afterthought. Again, he is even covering public transit costs with his proposal, something that still makes it hard for me to visit a doctor despite having medicaid. As a bonus, it means I wouldnt even have to use my UBI on transportation for doctors visits. History in the U. S has proven eliminating private choices never works. Were not European countries. Were the size of a continent and were a highly heterogeneous, diverse population. If you dont think for a second that the government wont use that to its advantage, then I dont know what to say; its not something I can afford to risk in my position. Meanwhile, I see progressives continuing to praise and defend and push for MORE only public options, despite how broken public services already are, just because of their own ideal of how it should be. I only wish they knew how out of touch this comes across as. Having the same program as European nations. same quality as European nations. We are not Europe and we are not Canada. Those countries don't have nearly the amount of history nor issues with poverty AND race-related caste systems that America does. Moreover, millions of people will be losing their insurance jobs, because due to barriers in application at the state level, not everyone is eligible for a gov job regardless of what Bernie says. Its not that Im against M4A(Im not. Theres just so many things wrong with the way he is specifically going about it and eliminating duplicative private as an option. Banning private isnt necessary. We should be attacking the core issues of why private isnt working here, despite working in places like Switzerland, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, etc. If the problem isnt specifically private healthcare, then we shouldnt be attacking that. Rather, we should be attacking the sheer amount of corruption and incentives for corruption in our current private healthcare market AS WELL as the differences in doctors' licensing requirements and healthcare among states (again, a state government issue. Outside of rhetoric, I am sorry, but Bernie really doesnt seem to actually be championing the poor in any tangible way outside of voting on bills. He is horribly weak on any topic concerning vulnerable groups and that aren't strictly related to corruption or class struggle. Being a bigot is neither illegal nor corrupt, and addressing those issues will not fix bigotry. I really do appreciate that Yang actually recognizes this in his proposals and the utmost importance in subverting the power of states rights by directly giving money to people instead of having it trickle down to the states instead. Bernie has voted on some good and some not so good things, just like all the other senators. For all the good he has voted on, he has also voted: against the Amber Alert system, against legalizing gay marriage and favoring leaving it to the states(again, state gov) for the 1994 Crime Bill, and for Trump's SESTA/FOSTA bill that is anti-sex work. If you were wondering why so many black supporters of Biden, Warren, Kamala, are so wary and even vitriolic of Bernie and his supporters (and by extension Yang who they don't trust, due to having surface similarities with Bernie) well now you know why; he does not even support any means of reparations, and continues to give tone deaf reasons for why. Whether you agree with reparations or not, the answer he gives here is ridiculous, and like Buttigieg, continues to tie in poverty in minority communities with lack of education, all while failing to see WHY they are poor in the first place - they lack money and capital because our very own system of government in the U. S made it difficult to accumulate that. His plan is also more just a criminal justice reform plan, and while that will help minorities in the system, I think we should be more focused on having less minorities go down the criminal route in the first place. Like his disability rights page, he simply pivots back to the FJG and 15 min wage as economic solutions for minorities. Again, all his solutions lead back to ultimately leaving the execution of these programs in the hands of the states, and giving them the final say in how they're actually handled at the ground level. Actions speak louder than words, and from what Ive seen firsthand, the actual actions hes taken is currently hurting communities like mine more than helping them. So yeah, that's it. I need some help sorting out the spiritual implications of what I'm feeling right now. From a purely objective standpoint, nearly everything in my life is fantastic, but I'm sad because I can't stop focusing on the one thing that's not: namely, that I am single and I really don't want to be. I am a 28 year old man. I'm active in my local church, where I've been entrusted with a certain level of leadership despite my age. I'm the Assistant Treasurer, teach Sunday school, lead a bible study at my house, and help lead the youth group. I've got a great group of friends that I am able to hang out with on a regular basis. We play board games and Dungeons & Dragons and do Bible studies. My career is going great. I have been promoted 3 times in the last 4 years, with my salary nearly doubling in that time. Upper management has taken note of my skills and are grooming me for future management positions. I own my own home, and my best friend rents a room from me, which is awesome and also brings in extra income. I'm able to save up for retirement and still have enough left over to donate to charitable organizations and causes that I believe in. Everything in my life has met or exceeded my expectations. It's really quite idyllic except for that one glaring omission: I lack any sort of female companionship. I want to get married and start a family. I believe strongly in the importance of family and I love kids (it's part of the reason I teach Sunday school. But I have only been on two dates in my entire life, both with the same woman a little over two years ago. She was a friend from high school who contacted me on social media and admitted she had a crush on me back then, but after going out a couple times we realized we didn't have anything in common anymore. It seems like everyone my age is married, or at least in a relationship. I only interact with three single women on a regular basis: two are co-workers who are off-limits because I am in a position of authority over them and the other is my best friend's younger sister who I have known so long that she might as well be my sister. Even if I did know a woman that I wanted to be with, I have no idea how to initiate a romantic relationship and I'm afraid that I will accidentally come across as a creep. I've thought about trying online dating, but that just seems desperate. On the other hand, I kind of feel desperate. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to be alone forever and it makes me sad. I thank God everyday in my prayers for the wonderful life he has given me. I really am very happy 90-95% of the time. But when I am left alone with my thoughts, I find my mind wandering to the firm but unpleasant conviction that I am doomed to watch all of my friends get married and start families (some already have) while I grow old and die alone. I try to focus on the blessings that God has given me rather than pining after the ones he hasn't, but I just can't seem to do it. Is that a sign of an ungrateful heart? I know all of the platitudes. I've even said some of them myself when helping teens through similar issues: God knows best and you need to trust in his timing. Your identity should be in Christ, not tied up in human relationships or lack thereof. All of these things are 100% true and I believe them, but somehow I am unable to find comfort in any of these truths. Does this show a lack of faith? With how great everything is going in my life, I feel like I should be happy all the time and I feel guilty that I'm not. When I look at some of the much larger problems that other people have to deal with, I feel as though I have no right to complain, so I don't. The only people I have discussed this with are my best friend and my dad. My best friend is two years younger than me and also single. He confessed to having similar thoughts and feelings, but didn't really have a solution. He just says he "tries not to think about it too much. My dad told me to give online dating a shot and assured me that there are plenty of women out there who are feeling the same way I am. He also advised me to cut back on some of the ministries I am involved in because it would be impossible to try to maintain a serious relationship with the amount of time I spend on church activities, and that I am probably in danger of suffering ministry burnout regardless of my relationship status. This is probably wise advice that I have not been able to bring myself to implement yet. I feel like cutting back on serving others to try to pursue a romantic relationship would be selfish. These feelings have been building up over the last few months and I just keep trying to push them back down, but this last week all of the Valentine's Day ads and stuff plunged me so deep into depression that I could barely function. I've thought about talking to my Pastor about it, but I'm afraid of coming across as whiny and ungrateful given how wonderful my life is. I do need counsel though. What should I do.

The worst of it, though, is that it was my nightmare this time. Gale had tried to save me. I was panicked from the start- I thought I was awake by how vivid it all was. I thought we were really under attack- but when I had been tossed out of the ship into blank space, felt the vacuum pull the air out of my lungs, I expected to die- not fall out of my nest. Gale reacted instantly, getting up and comforting me like I had comforted him before. I felt like I had just lost my Gale won't stop blaming himself. He think he's contaminated my mind somehow, that we shouldn't use the synch anymore- I disagreed firmly. "I can't just let you suffer because of one nightmare. I argued. "I- I'll be- Gale attempted. He couldn't say he'd be fine. He couldn't say he didn't need me. But he still shook his head in rejection. "I can't let you do this- this was only the first, it could happen a gazillion more times. Gazillion' isn't a number. Don't change the subject, you knew what I meant. I sighed, flustered- shaken, irritated, terrified. Neither of us could continue sleeping. "ntamination isn't possible. It's never occurred before. I explained. "You said this tech was new- and we've been using it extensively. Gale retorted on-point. "I'm. Not. Letting. You. Suffer. Alone. I told him. "That's final. Who the hell died and made you king. He demanded, a figure of speech questioning my authority. "We're in my residency- I have respected you in yours, you will respect me in mine. I told him flatly. He seemed a little hurt, but quit arguing with me. We were sitting across from each other on the floor. When I had first awaken from my nightmare and fallen, Gale had held me like I had held him nearly every night prior. It was a relief to feel his heart beating from inside his chest. I now knew, more than before, just how much suffering Gale was in. "Gale. I asked, already feeling guilty about what I was going to say. But somehow, he already knew. "I can't let you suffer, either. It was still dark out when we decided to do something mildly reckless. Gale proposed that we needed the assistance of alchohol. I asked if he had brought any. He had. "If this is an unhealthy coping mechanism, then why are we attempting this. I asked, taking a swig of the stuff anyway and handing the container back to Gale, who also took a swig. "It's a mild sedative. You remember being drunk, don't you. Not at all. I replied, and we laughed at that. It did feel nice, being just a little intoxicated- it felt warm, tasted good, left you relaxed and clouded your thoughts for you. s enough to do the trick, I think. Gale said simply, tightening the lid. I nodded in agreement. I felt like going to sleep again, but I didn't really want to. It's okay, I'll lay right beside you. If you're scared, I'll wake you. Gale reassured me, using my own words. It was still comforting to hear him say them, though. Suffering in company is still better than suffering alone. I got back into my nest, laying on my side, Gale's back to mine. We attached the synch leads again and tried to rest peacefully. ooooOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOoooo I winced at the sound, coming back to consciousness. ooooOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOoooo Siren! The siren! I sat upright, the leads being yanked from the side of my head, severing the connection, and it hurt- Gale jumped up with a yelp of surprise and pain. ooooOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOoooo "What the fu. Se ercc- se dacc- accner! SE-ERCC-DACC'ISH'T. I cursed, tossing open my luggage that I hadn't unpacked yet and deploying my armor. Gale jumped out of my nest and did the same, just as Inkitex barged in and started screeching at me. "Abs-qiil! Abs-qiil. She barked, tossing a weapon to me. I looked at Gale, but couldn't determine his expression beneath the visor. "What? You thought this was going to be a peaceful trip. I asked him as he finished reconstructing his Earth weapon. "I'm not allowed to fire until fired upon without the orders to kill. It's Guingëk. Oh- fuck yeah, I can kill. Good. Gale nodded briefly and turned on his camouflage feature, practically disappearing in front if me. The door opened and I knew he was gone already. The scene outside my dome was no less chaotic than usual- lines of my comrades and our allies, mostly Dquet-Obnious' like Inkitex- were boarding smaller attack drones and specialist crews preparing the 9-passenger assault fliers. I found my crew's main jet, and they were all there already. Except for Incciisha, who was on maternity leave- she was our primary cover-fire and explosives coordinator. My team turned to me. "Where's the Human. I'm right here. Gale spoke, to my left. I looked, but all I saw was a very large, heavy-looking cylinder with a rectangular brace at one end and what I now knew as a missile poking out of the other end. My team took a few steps back from him, and he aimed the weapon at a Guingëk drop-ship just overhead- and CRACK! SSHKR- BOOM. We watched as the missile hit it's target and the entire ship burst into flames, crashing into the hills below. The impact of just the launch seemed incredible, but Gale had held his ground firmly. I looked at the weapon. "What is that. If I could see his face, I guarantee he would be smiling. "Rocket launcher. Never gets old. My team seemed pleased and nodded, and we boarded our ship, Gale included. I caught a glimpse if Inkitex ordering her underlings onto a mini-dropper and launching it into the air, from which they activated jets on the armor of their powerful legs and spread their several wing/arm-ish appendages, used for gliding, to fly into battle. Gale leaned out the door a bit to watch- which made me nervous, and I knew he was doing this because at that closeness you could barely see the light glinting off small particlesof his armor- but he was seemingly impressed by what the Dquet-Obnious fighters were doing. "Damn, they're awesome. Gale remarked. Those of us that were Toksh thought the Dquet-Obnious tactics were nothing short of insanity. I pulled Gale back into the ship. "Okay, I need to hook your comms system up to ours- we're a warrior short. I told him. I bet he nodded. Kefficc, our electronics operator, began working on my comms tab and the wristwatch Gale handed him. Gale helped a bit with explaining what components did what, and we got his wristwatch to correspond with our comms tabs. "Great- test it out. I told him. Gale put the watch back on and sealed his armor over it again. "Urshocc, do you copy? Over. I tilted my head. "It works. So say, copy, over. Gale explained. I nodded. "Copy, over. We boarded the Guingëk drop-ship, firing our way through. Our weapons were clean and quiet compared to Gale's- and ours didn't shoot projectiles that could ricochet and go through several targets at once. It was tempting not to cease fire and just watch him tear the Guingëk apart. One Human. One Earth gun. The rocket launcher was still on our jet. He only had two rockets left. He only had one knife. Two fists. Two feet. Two lungs. One heart. But he was indestructible. Stealthy. Accurate. Lethal. This drop-ship was finished. "Gale, we're moving on. Hang on. Gale replied, and took something from a concealed compartment in the leg of his armor. It was small, round, and had a ring and a switch on one end. Gale rammed the door to the command bridge open with his shoulder, which required a lot of force, popped off the ring of the small device, threw it in the bridge room as the Guingëk captains hollered, and ran back towards the jet. Suddenly the ship lurched as the bridge had lost control. We all ran to jet, getting ahead of Gale, but he jumped and I pulled him aboard at the last second as the jet raced away from the crashing vessel. We all watched as it hit the ground and exploded. ~That's two ships he's demolished, and we've barely been here for ten minutes. Every ship we boarded soon experienced the same fate- when Gale ran out of ammunition, he took apart his weapon in one minute and stowed it away, then fought a Guingëk with just his knife in order to steal her weapon. Once he had it, he resumed shooting. When he no longer had any explosives, he still broke open the command bridge doors and went in and killed everything anyway- then told us to run when he had set the ship's crash course. Later, he had hijacked one of their smaller fighter drones and 'painted' it in blood by murdering a Guingëk on top of it, then took the ship and, without us, began attacking the other Guingëk fighters. My team watched, astonished. "What the hell. Se-ercc-dacc'ish't. Call him in, Urshocc, he's out of line. I DON'T COMMAND HIM. I barked. Gale kept fighting, and we kept fighting, until finally the Guingëk retreated. We did not persue them- but they came in over our comms and were panicking. Suddenly, their main command ship's entire left side exploded. We watched from below as the rest of the ship, left to right, practically disintegrated. Then, in the wake of the destruction, a tiny figure fell from the sky. A large swatch of fabric sprung from its back and the figure's descent slowed to a survivable, possibly even uninjureable, landing. They marched forth from beneath the fabric, and it was none other than Gale himself. Sgt. Derren H. Gale, Delta Company USMC Force Reconnaissance May 14th, 2045 Day 4 off of Earth I didn't plan on waking up to sirens. I didn't plan on fighting the Guingëk again- ever. I definitely, absolutely, did not plan to violate a Toksh War Pact. But hey- I'm not Toksh. I had been yelled at all day, dragged into countless hologram meetings, chewed out some more by Urshocc's crew- Urshocc was completely ignoring me- and Inkitex, was terrified of me. I think. She kept shaking her head at me. It was getting close to the end of my 'wake' cycle, but the sun was still pretty high up in the sky here. I was in another hologram meeting, but every building here could see the outside from within, but never within from outside. I was staring at the horizon in the distance, barely listening to the lecture this Toksh commander was giving me. Suddenly, my wristwatch alerted me that I had an incoming holo-call from my commander. ~Shit. Please excuse me for a moment- my commander is contacting me. I explained as politely as possible. The Toksh commander grunted in discontent, but was silent. Urshocc was standing right behind me at attention, but he had been silent all day. I answered the call, and the image of a room in the War Room in the White House came onto a hologram projected from my watch. It wasn't just the American President, but also her Vice President, all the Dictators and Presidents and Parliamentarians and Monarchs and Council members of all the other countries- the room was stuffed, all the way around the table and then some. And the Sergeant Major Oxylin J. Daniels was, of course, my battalion's own beloved General L. C. Macintosh. I saluted, and they saluted. The Toksh commander seemed confused, but watched us as well. "Glad to see you made it out alive, Marine. Word is, you pissed off our allies about some 'War Pact' they've got with the enemy. How're you holdin' up. General Macintosh asked me. I gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm alright- thanks, General. It's some kind of honor pact, not so much the 'War Pact'that they make it out to be- I've been gettin' hollered at for the past eleven hours. Mr. Get-Your-Ass-In-Line behind me here hasn't said a word to me all damn day. The place is fine, though. No structural damage, a few injuries, no casualties. Well, for everyone but the Guingëk, of course. The room chuckled. The President of Australia spoke next. "How many ya pop, love. She asked me. "Eight drop-ships, thirty-two fighters, and a big ol' command ship. She grinned at me, and I could hear the murmurs of approval from around the room. Urshocc breathed down my neck. He'd gotten closer and had been observing over my shoulder. The Toksh commander was expressionless at the moment. Our Lady President and Commander In Chief spoke next. "Is there a Toksh commander there with you. She asked me, becoming more serious now. "Yes, mam. Would you like to speak to him. She nodded, putting on her glasses and getting out her ipad and ipen to take notes. I set the view screen so both myself and the Toksh commander were visible to her. "Good evening. I'm Keisha Elroy, President of the United States Of America and Commander In Chief of my nation's great military. And you are called. Orsvin Ollite, Commander of Sector B and all it's Squadrons. s Urshocc's Commander. A pleasure to meet you- now, what seems to be the problem? As far as we're concerned, our Marine just did you a favor. My report states you were attacked- were you not. She asked. Orsvin nodded. "The planet is a currently a military installation. Before our war with the Guingëk, it was a newly budding colony. The Peace-Maker your Marine has been traveling with grew up there. These days, attacks are commonplace, but as part of our War Pact with the Guingëk, they may attack these outposts so long as they do not destroy the planets themselves nor attack any civilian outposts. My President listened to this, as did all of Earth's leaders. She considered something. long have you been at war with the Guingëk. The Toksh Commander answered immediately with the exact calculations. "Eleven of our years, thirteen of our months, two of our weeks, five of our days, twelve of our hours, fifteen of our minutes, and the seconds are ticking away. he listed off, still clearly irritated as he had enunciated most of the syllables and had spoken quite fast. My world leaders murmured to one another about his blatant formality. My President cleared her throat, silencing them, and continued. "You've seen what just one of our Marines is capable of. If all of your fighters are as impressive as he is, then how is it that when the Guingëk attacked your only planet that it took you seven of your months to defeat them. The Toksh Commander interrupted critically. My President and the world leaders didn't have an immediate answer. "How many of your fellows were captured before you fought back? How many civilians had died. He continued with the barrage. I spoke up. I had to. "We were already in a war when they arrived. The room was silent. I continued. "We. I took a deep breath. "We were fighting one another. All the Humans in this hologram, they were not always united. Each and every one of them still holds a title of their own, per independent societal hierarchies. We have some elected government officials, military dictators, monarchs given authority at birth- we were not peaceful, when the Guingëk began to invade. It was the largest of our wars in all of our history until exactly then. We had not continued exploring our neighbouring planets. We had no adequate space craft to defend our planet with. I paused a moment, and General Macintosh nodded for me to continue. "We had to wait until they came down to the ground. We had never seen aliens before- we had no protocols, no way to initiate first communications or decode a language that might not even have been verbal- for all we knew, they could've communicated with infrared light waves that we couldn't even see! We knew nothing, and we were terrified and excited and hopeful and doubtful all at once- we didn't want to waste what could have been our only chance to acquaint ourselves with an alien race, and we put down our weapons. They tricked us. Betrayed us. I looked into the eyes of the Toksh Commander. "When I attacked, that was for my race. My planet. You are our allies. We will fight for you, too, if you allow us- we understand that you are in a complicated situation due to the War Pact in order to preserve your civilians. But none of us will tolerate being attacked by the Guingëk. We will claim the damages, and you don't have to be a part of our war. Urshocc was staring at me, and I knew he wanted to confront me now, but he wouldn't speak out of turn. The Toksh Commander nodded. "I it wouldn't cause an inconvenience, could you please stand down while I deliver this message to the Cooperative Galactic Council. He asked. My President nodded her consent of it. The hologram switched to the standby image briefly, and it only took a few minutes before the Toksh Commander had returned and come back online. "We will break the War Pact if you can take down some more of those Guingëk command ships that are lingering over our civilian skies. They have us pinned down at the moment because of your attack, but do not expose yourselves. You are the key to victory. The Guingëk empire will be reduced to pirate hoards. The races they have enslaved will know freedom once again...

I firmly believe Bourque in the same tier as Howe, Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux. even if he's behind those guys, he's absolutely in the same tier. I remember Bourque, yeah, One of the greats from back in the day. He was not one of the greats. He's the great that other and future greats should be compared to. and in our lifetimes, I'm beyond certain that we're going to watch them all fall short. Maybe Bourque didn't change the way the game was played the way some of those guys did but. it's only because he didn't need to. He fit the way the game was played. as if the game was made for him. He could beat people with physicality, he could beat people with finesse, and he did it at an unbelievably elite level, for 30 minutes a night, for 22 years. Uh, Bourque was good but not that good mate. Time for a refresher. Shall we? Strap in, this is a long one. Shots Most shots by a defenseman in a season during Bourque's career. During his career, Bourque held 8 of the top-9 slots. Expand that to until today and his seasons still place 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 12th, pretty much only falling due to two defensemen who spent time at forward. Compare that to most shots, by a forward during that time period. there are 13 forwards in the top-20. Brett Hull is the closest comparable to "dominating his positon" and he falls clearly short. Bourque was consistently ahead of his peers, moreso than anyone else was ahead of theirs. He finished top-10 in the NHL (even among forwards. in shots in 13 - more than half - of his 22 seasons. Three times he led the league in shots (84, 87, 95. In 1985 he was 2nd to Gretzky, in 1988 he was 2nd to Lemieux, and in 1996 he was 2nd to Jagr. Most shots/game in a season by a defenseman, all-time Ray Bourque and Bobby Orr own 11 of the top 12 slots. Bourque shows up 8 times before anyone other than Orr shows up twice, and almost caught Orr for the record. Orr's best season was 5. 43 shots/game; Bourque's was 5. 36. Raw shot totals by a defenseman in a season Bourque owns 8 of the top-17 seasons. If not for those two defensemen-playing-forward, he would own 8 of the top 15 seasons. His two best seasons were topped by Orr only twice. Most seasons with 250+ shots, forwards included Jagr/Gretzky did it 10 times each. Bourque? 14. He didn't "accidentally" set records like: Most career shots 360 consecutive games with a shot 19 shots in a single game Over the past 10 seasons, 3. 85 shots per game would comfortably put you 2nd in the entire league in shots per game. forwards included. That was Bourque's career average. Only Ovechkin, Bure, Lemieux, and Dionne have averaged more shots/game throughout their career. Who cares about shots, goals are what win games. Get on with it. You're right - forget all of that. Throw all of that evidence in the toilet. Flush twice. Goals Recently, Shea Weber reached 10+ goals for the 11th time in his career. A fantastic achievement; even HoF defensemen Pronger/Niedermayer managed that only 8 times apiece. The first time Bourque failed to reach double digit goals was his age-40 season. Most seasons with 10 + goals in NHL history (leaving for the WHA may hurt some players here) Bourque is 7th overall, doing it 21 times. There are only 6 defensemen in the top-100. (shoutout to Patrick Marleau, who moved Bourque to 8th two days ago, and surely would have tied Francis/Jagr if he didn't spent the 04-05 lockout helping his parents on their farm. Let's bump 10 to 15 for shits and giggles. Only five defensemen in NHL history have scored 15+ goals, 10+ times (Weber could be the 6th with 1 more 15+ goal season) Defenseman 15+ goals Coffey 10 MacInnis 11 Potvin 12 Housley 13 Bourque 18 Four of the greatest offensive defensemen ever did it 10/11/12/13 times... and then there's Bourque with 18 seasons. He made the team as an 18 year old rookie and scored 17 goals. Then he scored 17 (or more) goals for 15 years in a row, followed by a 23 goal pace during the lockout-shortened '94 season. And then he scored 17+ in back to back years after that. I'm going to call that 18 consecutive years. That's incredible longevity and production for a forward. Bourque did it from the backend, and the best playmaker he had was. 4. 5 seasons of Adam Oates? Forwards with a similar number of career goals as Ray Bourque: Vincent Lecavalier, Jason Arnott, Tony Amonte, Joe Thornton, Patrick Elias, Marian Gaborik, John LeClair, Paul Kariya, Shane Doan, Markus Naslund Some defensemen bring value with lots of points, not just scoring like 20 goals. Okay, alright already. Forget it. Take all that evidence and shred it, then set the shreds on fire. Points Speaking of failing to reach double digit goals in his final season. Bourque still finished tied for 3rd in defensive scoring that year, behind only "HoF defensemen in their prime. Brian Leetch and Nicklas Lidstrom. At age 40. It's always been a remarkable feat to consistently score more points than games played. There have been 30 players who have a point-per-game of. 1. 0 in at least 10 seasons: 29 are in, or will be in, the Hall of Fame (sorry Pierre Turgeon, you totally deserve it) 28 are forwards (Coffey, Bourque) Only 3 of those forwards did it more than Bourque: Gretzky, Howe, Dionne. Bourque's consistent longevity and production, by that measure, was bested by only 3 forwards. I really feel like there should be, I don't know, maybe a dozen forwards. you find any defenseman on that list. 8 defensemen have ever cracked 1, 000 points. Eight. In history. Erik Karlsson has the next realistic chance at being the 9th 1000pt defenseman; he reached 600 points in the same game Marleau passed Bourque 2 days ago. Bourque has 1, 579. That puts Karlsson. just under 1, 000 points behind him. 8 defensemen in history have managed that in their career, and that's roughly how far Karlsson is behind right now. Karlsson turns 30 in 4 months. If Karlsson retires at age 39, averages a 60 point pace, and only misses ~12 games a year... he might get 1, 000 career points. To catch Bourque, Karlsson would need to play another 12. 5 years (until he's 42) without missing a game, and average 79 points a season. Nobody is going to catch Bourque. He was a _defense_man, who cares about points. Okay! Good grief. Take all that evidence, tie a rock around it, and huck it down the Mariana Trench. Time on ice Sadly, the NHL didn't start officially tracking time on ice until the final few years of Bourque's career, but. Between ages 37 and 40, he was 2nd in ice time in the league, playing well over 26 minutes a night. His playoff ice time those 4 years - over 30 minutes a game. If that's slightly inflated by some OT games: it absolutely doesn't matter. Only 5 players saw more playoff ice time in that span and they all played in 13-20 more games. Throughout his 20s and early 30s? Who doubts Bourque was consistently eating over 30 minutes a night? Maybe even 35? Did he reach 40 minutes some games? Bourque turned 40 years old a couple months into the '00- 01 season. This is how Bob Hartley distributed his shorthanded icetime that year. He was top-4 (yes, four) for 17 years to start his career, and he not once, in 22 years, was he worse than 7th. What other player can you say that about? In any sport? Perhaps a handful in history? He was pretty much the only mainstay during the last 17 years of the Bruins record setting Playoff Appearance streak - and that streak certainly didn't end because of Bourque - as mentioned above, he got Norris attention that year. Some of those guys were not super competitive at the end of their career - kept on to teach youngsters, to play out their contracts, as powerplay specialists or role players. Some of them continued to pile up offensive numbers but lost an edge defensively. Not Bourque. He was an absolute monster, from the start of his career and for 22 years to the very end. His "peak" seasons were crushing, His "great" seasons were comparable to many HoF'ers "peak" seasons, His "meh" seasons were still extremely comparable to elite defensemen just outside their prime. Not only are the two are pretty much neck and neck, but. gobs of elite players from history are way behind the two of them. Is that a perfect measure? No. But taken with the totality of information provided above? Even if you did shred/light/sink/flush all that evidence as requested? There's just too much of it. I don't think that era-adjusting is the be-all end-all. I haven't mentioned Harvey (7 Norris trophies in 8 years) or Shore (4 Harts) for that reason. That being said... Award voting is among his peers, and he absolutely crushed that - in a manner that I sincerely doubt we'll ever see a defenseman replicate. Nobody in the NHL is even close to being consistently top-10 in Norris voting for a full decade. Time on ice is dictated by his coach and his capability, and has nothing to do with era. His team winning% fell by 7. 2% in the 1. 6 seasons worth of games he missed; that time on ice seems well-spent. His closest comparables had careers that overlapped his. He wasn't just compiling a fantastic career in a void - he was doing it while playing against all those guys. Fuck stats and numbers and all that stuff. Show me clips. I would love to, but Sadly... Yeah, Bourque had highlight plays, but. That wasn't what made Bourque great. The highlights were a cherry on top of the desert of Bourque's game; all the small things he did, and how consistently he did them, was the main course of the meal. In Summary. Ray Bourque's career was basically ~15 years of Norris-worthy play with 5-6 years of being "just" a clearly top-5 to top-10'ish defenseman. Please, the next time you see someone talking about the greatest defenseman ever. If someone rattles off the name Bourque like he was "just" one of those greats from the 80s/90s, politely remind them. Send them this link. Iako je bio poznat kao sportski tip koji stalno govori o treninzima, rapu, curama, tetovaama i vatrometu, taj se 26-godišnjak punih deset godina drogirao i to uspješno skrivao čak i od svojih najbliih. Kad više, kako sam kae, nije imao izbora, otišao je na liječenje u komunu, iz koje je izišao prije deset dana. Tijekom razgovora koji smo vodili krajem prošlog tjedna Marin Ivanović Stoka ostavio je dojam puno smirenijeg momka od onog kojeg pamtim od prije, koncentriraniji je i staloeniji te, moda najupečatljivije, siguran u svoje izliječenje. Kad govorimo o vašoj ovisnosti, o kojim je točno drogama riječ. Uvijek sam bio sklon amfetaminima i kokainu, dakle extacy, speed, trava i kokain. Kad ste se počeli drogirati? Sjećate li se što ste prvo uzeli. Sa 16 godina, u 2. razredu srednje škole, a uzeo sam speed. U klubu Odeon, u Klaićevoj ulici, bilo je natjecanje u freestyle repanju i išlo je nas 30. Jednom je dečku bio rođendan, dali su mi da probam i kad sam povukao lajnu - Isuse! Četiri sata sam repao, nisam se dao s bine. To mi je bilo toliko super da sam već sutra opet uzeo speed. Koliko ste često uzimali drogu. Drogirao sam se intenzivno, a što se tiče količine - bio sam potpuni megaloman. Dok bi drugi uzimali pet extacyja, ja bih ih dnevno uzimao i po 25. Tri godine zaredom uzimao sam ih svakodnevno. Jedno vrijeme sam ih uzimao i prije spavanja. Kako ste onda uopće zaspali. Nisam spavao. Naviknuo sam se na takav način ivota. Sve sam radio pod extacyjem. Poznati ste kao sportski tip i puno trenirate. Kako se drogiranje uklopilo u to. Drogom sam dobivao još veću snagu, išao sam iznad ljudskih mogućnosti. Zar niste imali zdravstvenih problema. Naravno da jesam, sad mi, primjerice, srce preskače. Ali u to vrijeme nisam razmišljao o tome. Čak i kad sam shvatio da si radim loše, više se nisam mogao kontrolirati. Kad sam prestao s tolikim konzumiranjem extacyja, samo sam se prebacio na kokain. Odakle vam novac za drogu, pogotovo kad je riječ o tako čestom konzumiranju. Od nastupa. Pjevao sam, svaki vikend sam dobivao oko 1000 eura za nastupe i to bih odmah potrošio na drogu. A i kriminal. Govorimo o ljudima s kojima sam provodio noći. Iziđeš van navečer, a kući dođeš oko 10 ujutro. Gledano iz sadašnje perspektive, moete li reći zašto ste se uopće drogirali. Zato jer mi je droga davala osjećaj moći. Osjećaj lane sigurnosti. Njome sam kompenzirao samoću. Odrastao sam u obitelji punoj ljubavi, a kad sam tu ljubav prerastao, zaljubio sam se u curu. S njom sam bio nekoliko godina, prekinuli smo zbog droge i onda je sve otišlo kvragu. Emotivno sam bio prazan, povrijedio sam ljude koji su me voljeli i ostao sam, a samoće sam se najviše bojao. Uz drogu - taj je osjećaj nestajao. Ljudi s kojima sam provodio vrijeme dizali su me u nebo - drogiran sam pred njima izvodio show, a oni bi vikali: Stole je car, Stole je super" i opet sam se osjećao dobro. Toliko vam je značilo tuđe mišljenje. Postao sam ovisnik o tuđem mišljenju. Samo mi je bilo vano što će ljudi oko mene misliti o meni i bio sam spreman raditi budalu od sebe za pohvalu. Istodobno ste gradili i rappersku karijeru. Znači li to da ste nastupali drogirani. Točno. Uvijek. Čist sam bio jedino na dočeku pretprošle Nove godine koju sam vodio s Vlatkom Pokos na Trgu bana Jelačića i kad sam nastupio na dočeku rukometaša. Kad sam nastupao drogiran, maltretirao sam publiku, radio incidente, palio odjeću, bio degutantan. Publika sigurno nije uivala, a mene je baš bilo briga - bio sam drogiran i meni je bilo super. Jeste li ikad pomislili da to što radite nije dobro. Naravno, ali teško je bilo svjesno razlučivati stvari. Doduše, onda su počeli i problemi sa zdravljem, što me natjeralo da malo promislim o svemu. Tresle su mi se ruke, stalno sam se znojio, otresao sam se na ljude oko sebe. Shvatio sam da pretjerujem i po količini droge koju sam konzumirao i po novčanim iznosima koje sam na drogu trošio. Čak sam krenuo i na razgovore s psihijatrima, i to prije nego što su i moji roditelji shvatili da sam ovisnik. Pokušao sam se zapravo "skinuti" na svoju ruku. Ipak, to je sve bilo kratkog vijeka jer ovisniku jedan dan bez droge izgleda kao mjesec. Koliko ste najdulje bili čisti. Po tjedan dana u nekoliko navrata. Ali nikad nisam bio dovoljno jak da se odem liječiti. Prijatelji su mi pokušavali pomoći, ali ja sam elokventan, jak na riječima i vrlo brzo bih ih uvjerio da nisu u pravu i da nemam problem. Svima sam manipulirao. U kojem su trenutku vaši roditelji, mama Vesna i tata Jakša, shvatili da ste ovisnik. Sumnjali su oni, ali ja sam im sin jedinac i, kad bih ih uvjerio da je sve u redu, oni su pristajali na moja objašnjenja jer nije lako priznati da ti se jedino dijete drogira. Posumnjali su kad me policija uhvatila s marihuanom pa sam morao ići na testiranje na drogu. Mislili su da se stroj pokvario kad su izišli rezultati i vidjeli koliko exctasyja imam u svom organizmu. In “ The Times of Bill Cunningham, ” the late New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham appears before us as a blissed-out aging choirboy. He sits in his small apartment, surrounded by file cabinets jammed with his work, a geek in his element, with a shock of gray hair and two jutting front teeth that give him a big rabbity smile so eager its giddy — and the thing is, he means it. That antic grin lights up the room. “The Times of Bill Cunningham” is the second documentary to be made about the Times legendary on-the-street photographer and shutterbug of society, and it contains a revealing story about the first, “Bill Cunningham New York. ” That film was released in 2011, when Cunningham was in his early eighties (he died in 2016) and it was a profile made with his ardent approval and cooperation. So youd assume that he might have wanted to attend the New York premiere of it. But no. He skipped the premiere, and for good measure never bothered to see the movie. Instead, when the early spring evening that should have been his red-carpet moment was happening, Cunningham was out doing what he always did: gliding through the New York streets on his trademark bicycle, looking for ordinary people to photograph — and not-so-ordinary people, though the beauty of Cunninghams work is that he never made the distinction. He didnt see it, so he didnt make it. In one of his typical Sunday photo collages, you might encounter five different images of women on the street, each photographed wearing the same dress, all looking quite different in it, next to a shot of a celebrity strolling along in that same dress. But youd always have to do a double take before you said, “Oh, look, its Claire Danes, ” because Cunningham lent each figure the graceful mystery and radiance of a celebrity. On his weekly page, everybody was a star. Cunningham himself became a star, though only reluctantly, in the most head-ducking and self-effacing way. He thrived on being behind the camera and behind the scenes, as he had since the 1940s, when he arrived in New York from his native Boston to work at Bonwit Teller. Theres now a full-scale genre of fashion-world documentaries, a category that found its commercial niche around a decade ago, with the release of “Valentino: The Last Emperor. ” But something that has struck me over the last year is that theres a special, intoxicating quality to movies that excavate the fashion demimonde prior to the 1960s — in other words, the “Phantom Thread” era or before. It might be Warhol doing his shoe drawings in the 50s, or Cecil Beaton inventing the 30s fairy-tale kingdom according to Vogue, or (in this case) Bill Cunningham, a sharply grinning young man of the most innocent flamboyance, from a conservative working-class Irish Catholic family, coming to New York and deciding to become a milliner, all because he thought that womens hats could be like something out of a dream. “The Times of Bill Cunningham” is built around an extended interview Cunningham gave in 1994 to a reporter named Mark Bozek (whos the director of the film. The interview was supposed to be 10 minutes long, but Cunningham, then 65, just kept talking. He was one of those lucky individuals whod discovered the secret of a happy existence: If you love what you do and do what you love, youll never work a day in your life. The Cunningham we meet took this ethos to a purified Buddhist extreme. He went out to shoot pictures every day, reveling in the discovery of each moment, and he got invited to some very fancy parties, but apart from that he led a spartan existence. In the 50s, he moved into one of the fabled studios above Carnegie Hall and occupied that privileged but monastic space until the day he died. It was like a highbrow version of the Chelsea Hotel, and we hear great stories about how Marlon Brando, who also had a studio there, would hide out in Cunninghams to get away from all the girls who were mobbing him, or how Cunningham rubbed shoulders with figures from Martha Graham to a naked house-guesting Norman Mailer. Cunningham speaks neurotically quickly, still with a trace of his Boston accent, and the quality he communicates is an openness to any inspiration. The secret of his photography, he says, wasnt aesthetic talent; it was closer to having a detectives eye. Thats why, on the sidewalk, he was always able to spot people like Boy George or — in a historic moment — the aging reclusive Greta Garbo, who hadnt been photographed for decades. He was a man of the moment. When Bozek asks Cunningham, late in the film, if he is ever sad about anything, without saying a word he puts his head down and silently begins to weep. Just like that. A little later, he tells us that hes thinking of all the friends he lost to AIDS.
